Music is a universal language. At Inini's Music Club, we've seen it work wonders—helping people communicate when words fail, connecting people across language barriers, and providing a joyful, therapeutic space for expression.
Why Music?
Research shows that making music together:
- Reduces stress and anxiety
- Builds social connections
- Provides non-verbal emotional expression
- Creates a sense of achievement
- Connects us to cultural heritage
Our Instruments
Drums
Drumming is ancient and universal. In our sessions, we use drums from different traditions—djembe from West Africa, dhol from South Asia, and simple frame drums that anyone can play. The rhythm connects us, grounds us, and allows us to be together without needing to talk.
Mbira
The mbira (or thumb piano) comes from Zimbabwe. Its gentle, meditative sound has been used for centuries in healing ceremonies. Learning to play mbira requires focus and patience—qualities that help calm anxious minds. For Zimbabwean members, it's a powerful connection to home.
Voice
We sing together—simple songs, rounds, and sometimes just humming. Singing releases endorphins and oxytocin, the bonding hormone. Even people who say they "can't sing" find their voice in our sessions.
Stories from Music Club
"I hadn't played music since leaving Syria. The war took everything—including my oud. When I first held a drum at Music Club, I cried. But then I played. And for the first time in years, I felt like myself."
— Tariq
"I came to England not speaking a word of English. At Music Club, I didn't need words. I could just play. Now, a year later, I'm learning English, and I have friends from all over the world—all because we made music together."
— Elena

The music club saved me. That's not an exaggeration. When everything else felt impossible, I could come here and just play. Thank you for creating this space.
