Winter can be challenging for anyone, but for those of us navigating migration, cultural adjustment, and the ongoing work of integration, the darker months can feel particularly heavy. Here are five practical ways to protect your mental health this winter.

1. Create Light Where You Can

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is real, and it can hit harder when you're already dealing with the emotional weight of displacement. Some ideas:

  • Open curtains as soon as it's light
  • Spend time near windows during the brightest part of the day
  • Consider a SAD lamp (we have some you can try at our drop-in)
  • Add warm, bright colours to your space

2. Maintain Connection

Winter naturally makes us want to hibernate, but isolation can worsen mental health.

  • Our drop-in continues every Tuesday—come for the warmth and company
  • Set up regular video calls with loved ones
  • Join our WhatsApp community for daily check-ins
  • If you can't leave home, let us know—we can arrange phone befriending

3. Honour Your Body's Rhythms

Winter is a time of rest in nature. We can learn from that.

  • Go to bed earlier if you feel tired
  • Don't fight the urge to slow down
  • Gentle movement (stretching, walking) rather than intense exercise
  • Warm, nourishing foods that comfort and sustain

4. Create Winter Rituals

Rituals give structure and meaning to our days.

  • Light a candle at the same time each evening
  • Make a warm drink mindfully—notice the steam, the warmth, the taste
  • Play music from home that connects you to happier memories
  • Cook a traditional dish and share it (even if just with yourself)

5. Reach Out Before Crisis

Don't wait until you're struggling badly to ask for help.

  • If you notice your mood dropping, come to a drop-in
  • Call our helpline: 07394 635502
  • Email us: admin@ininii.co.uk
  • If you have a counsellor, keep your appointments even when you don't feel like going

Remember: This Too Shall Pass

Winter is temporary. The days will lengthen. The light will return. In the meantime, be gentle with yourself. You're doing important work just by showing up, day after day.

If you're struggling right now, please reach out. You don't have to do this alone.
